What to measure first
Measure the garage internally at its narrowest point, your car with mirrors, its length and height, and the total width when the doors are opened as far as you need. Measure the depth of the proposed storage including handles. Choose your own walking gap; the tool does not prescribe a safe minimum.
How the calculation works
The car is centred within the width left after a continuous left-wall storage run. It is also centred between the entrance and rear storage. The full storage depth is reserved alongside the car, even for a short run; this is a conservative rectangular model.
- Side gap = (garage width − storage depth − car width) ÷ 2.
- Door gap = (garage width − storage depth − total door-open width) ÷ 2.
- End gap = (garage length − rear storage depth − car length) ÷ 2.
A worked example
A 3,000 × 6,000 mm garage, 400 mm side storage, 450 mm rear storage and a 1,900 × 4,400 mm car leave 350 mm on each side and 575 mm at each end. A total door-open width of 2,600 mm leaves 0 mm beyond the door envelope. These are illustrative inputs, not typical garage or car dimensions.
What this cannot check
This is a dimension comparison, not a structural assessment. It cannot establish load capacity, fixing suitability, door shape, door swing, an escape route or whether you can manoeuvre through the entrance. No product catalogue is loaded: enter dimensions from the maker’s instructions for the exact item. A builder or competent installer should assess uncertain construction.
Read the fixings and load-rating guide before fitting storage.
