Single garage storage ideas that keep the car in

Plan shallow storage, a usable driver-side route and room to retrieve what you keep.

In a narrow single garage, one wall of carefully sized storage often works better than lining both sides. Choose the parking position and driver-side opening space first. Then see what depth remains on the opposite wall and at the back.

Position Useful for Check before filling it
Opposite the driver's door Shallow shelves or tool storage Mirrors, passenger access and projections from hooks
Rear wall Cabinets or a compact work surface Car length, boot access and drawer opening
Near the garage entrance Regularly used bikes and bags Door sweep and space to bring items out
High on a suitable wall Light, infrequently used belongings Safe access and maker-approved mounting

Work from the tightest point

Measure across the garage where the car doors actually open. A pier halfway down a wall may make the nominal internal width misleading. Note skirting, brickwork projections and services too. Storage depth means the furthest projection when loaded, including handles, brackets and anything hanging from them.

An illustrative width calculation is 2,700 mm inside width minus a 1,900 mm parked car width minus 350 mm storage depth: 450 mm remains in total. That is not 450 mm on each side. It also does not prove that anyone can open a door comfortably. Those figures describe an example, not a recommended minimum.

Choose your own access requirement and check it with your car. Enter the measurements in the layout planner to see how moving the storage changes the available width.

Leave a place for the awkward items

Measure bikes by their loaded shape, not just the width of a hook. Handlebars and pedals can reach into the walking route. A ladder needs room to come off its brackets without striking the car. A box needs space in front of its shelf so you can hold it while turning around.

Make a short list of belongings that are difficult to move. Give those a workable location before using the remaining gaps for small tools. If everything fits only when it is tightly packed, the arrangement is unlikely to survive a busy week.

Avoid a deep wall of boxes

Deep shelves can hold more but make it tempting to stack items in two rows. The back row becomes hard to reach with the car inside. Shallower shelves with labels facing out may hold less while making more of the space usable.

Check shelf construction and installation requirements against the relevant manufacturer instructions. A wall-mounted arrangement is only an option where the wall and fixing method are suitable; a clear floor does not establish that the installation is safe.

Test the full trip

Tape the proposed footprint, then park, unload shopping, open the house door and take out a bike. If one activity requires moving the car, decide whether that is acceptable before buying. Preserve the essential escape and access routes your household needs. For a broader clear-out, use the garage organisation plan.
