A workshop corner in a garage with a car

Allow space for you, the workpiece and equipment before choosing a bench.

A workshop corner needs more room in use than at rest. A bench footprint shows where the furniture stands, but leaves out the person working, an open drawer, a projecting workpiece and any extraction equipment. Draw the working arrangement before filling the back wall with cabinets.

Space Include
Permanent footprint Bench, handles, cabinet feet and stored equipment
Working area Where you stand and move while doing the task
Material space Length needed to bring in and support a workpiece
Services Suitable power, lighting and equipment clearances
Clean-up route Access for removing waste and returning tools

Decide whether the car stays inside

For small clean tasks, a compact rear-wall bench may be practical with the car parked. For larger or dusty work, plan a separate working period with the vehicle removed and the space prepared appropriately. A car cover is not a dust-control system or protection against a moving workpiece.

Mark the operating area with the equipment positioned as it will be used. Include any vice, clamps and support stands. If you cannot handle the material without crossing the car's space, the job and the parked car do not fit together.

Give tools a reachable home

Keep the equipment for a regular task together. Check that the cabinet or drawer can open while you stand at the bench. Heavy tools should not require an awkward lift over another object.

Follow the bench and storage manufacturer's requirements for assembly, stability, fixing and loading. See cabinets and workbenches for the dimension checks that are easy to miss when comparing a matching set.

Make dust control part of the layout

Wood dust needs control where it is produced. HSE's wood dust guidance, written for workplaces, explains the role of extraction and warns against sweeping or blowing settled dust into the air. Its detailed occupational requirements are not a complete design for a home garage, but the source is useful when discussing equipment with a competent supplier.

Leave space for suitable extraction and hose routes, and follow the tool and extraction makers' instructions. Do not assume that opening the garage door makes a dusty task adequately controlled. Keep people who are not involved away from the work.

The layout planner can check the stored footprint. Use a physical trial for the larger working arrangement; the planner does not assess dust, electrical safety or machine operating zones.
