Storing roof boxes, paddleboards and kayaks

Check support, lifting space and door clearance for bulky leisure equipment.

Choose storage around the equipment's own care instructions, then check whether you can move it safely between that position and the garage entrance. A roof box, rigid kayak and inflatable paddleboard may look like similar bulky objects, but they do not necessarily suit the same supports or storage orientation.

Equipment Confirm first Space to include
Roof box Approved support and orientation Whole shell, handles and lifting movement
Rigid kayak or board Maker's support positions and storage advice Bow, stern and turning space
Inflatable board Whether to deflate and how to pack it Bag, pump and dry accessories
Hoist or ceiling rack Intended load and structural requirements Full travel and lowest loaded point

Start with the equipment manual

Do not assume that hanging is harmless because an item is light. For example, the Two Bare Feet paddleboard user guide specifies deflated storage and says hanging is not recommended. That instruction is specific to the equipment covered by that guide; follow your own board's manual rather than transferring advice from another brand.

Clean and dry equipment as its maker directs before packing it away. Include paddles, fins, straps and other accessories in the storage plan so they do not end up loose behind the car.

A hoist needs a complete installation check

Get the exact hoist's current instructions before buying. Thule's Multilift 2 instructions illustrate the sort of model-specific document you need. Confirm its intended use, suitable attachment structure and operating procedure; a load rating alone does not establish that your ceiling is suitable.

Plan the loading position as well as the raised position. Can the equipment sit directly where it needs to be lifted, with the car safely out of the way? Can the person operating it see and control the movement? Keep people away from suspended loads and follow the manufacturer's operating precautions.

Check the door through its full movement

Measure the lowest part of the loaded arrangement, including straps or any projecting equipment. Compare it with the car and the entire door mechanism's travel. Do not use the height of an empty rack as the loaded clearance.

The ceiling rack check can compare your entered heights. It does not assess support points, the ceiling structure or the movement of a suspended kayak. If you cannot establish those safely, get the supplier or a competent installer to assess the arrangement.

For equipment used often, a suitable lower wall position may be more practical than an overhead solution. Measure the actual loaded projection and preserve your normal route beside the car.
